Integration of hydropower and solar PV: a case study

In spring 2024, Easy Hydro completed the refurbishment of a hydropower scheme at a private estate in Ireland, including the design of a new automation strategy. The site also has solar PV installed and features a water storage pond, and therefore one of the major goals of the project was only to operate the turbine when the sun is not shining in order to gain the maximum benefit from the scarce water resources.

After one year of operations, Easy Hydro has analysed the system’s performance and confirmed that it operated as expected. With a peak output of 17 kW, the yearly generation was 40.6 MWh, which was concentrated at night except for the period between December and February, when the turbine had enough water to operate 24/7.

Despite the seasonal variations in the river flow, the control system successfully optimises the water resources, complementing the PV production and maximising the renewable energy generation.
