Easy Hydro and Glan Agua announce a Strategic Alliance at the AEE Conference in Dublin

Easy Hydro has entered a strategic alliance with Glan Agua, a leading provider of water and wastewater solutions, to offer renewable electricity solutions to the water and wastewater industry across Ireland and UK.

The partnership will assist the water industry in reducing carbon emissions, supporting the net-zero pledge and generating cost-effective, renewable green energy.

Hydropower is a well-known technology used to generate energy from the movement and pressure of downward-flowing water. In existing water networks, for example from upland sources or reservoirs, pressure-reducing valves dissipate this energy to ensure it is an acceptable pressure for commercial and household distribution. Easy Hydro has developed an innovative solution using a micro hydropower turbine to capture this lost energy and convert it into electrical power that can be used to power water or wastewater treatment facilities.

Fabio Bacci, Innovation Manager, Glan Agua

Finding Easy Hydro was a real innovation achievement for us. Over the past two and a half years, we worked alongside Easy Hydro on our first installation of their solution at one of the water treatments plants we operate, located in Fethard, Co Tipperary. The installation was essentially a non-invasive retrofit; an existing concrete base and a minor adjustment to the pipework was the extent of the disruption it caused to the works. We were really enthusiastic to be piloting the technology and the installation proved phenomenally successful, generating approximately 30% of the average energy consumption of the plant. Moreover, the microturbine can often feed surplus energy back to the grid.

Based on over 10 years of research and development, Easy Hydro’s expertise enables off-the-shelf pumps to be used as efficient turbines, at a fraction of the cost of conventional turbines and with a shorter lead time. The return on investment can be as low as only two years and the technology can have a life span of over thirty years.

Daniele Novara, CEO, Easy Hydro

Our partnership with Glan Agua allows us to strategically apply our technology to the water and wastewater industry where they are leaders in their field. Glan Agua’s mechanical, electrical, and commissioning expertise coupled with our technology is a natural synergy and has enormous potential for reducing energy costs and carbon footprint in the industry.

Glan Agua and Easy Hydro are launching their strategic alliance at the AEE Europe Energy Conference and Expo in Dublin. The two-day conference brings together energy engineers from industry & business across Europe to openly discuss the challenges of energy efficiency in today’s market.

Fabio Bacci added

Glan Agua are renowned disruptors across the water industry. Bringing the Easy Hydro technology to market, at a time when energy is a premium commodity, is an encouraging prospect. We are already at feasibility, concept or design stages for a number of suitable sites that will replicate the success at Fethard. Glan Agua are earnestly looking forward to working with Easy Hydro in providing renewable energy solutions to the water industry.

New control system: a more robust, reliable and resilient solution for our turbines

During the last weeks, our team has been testing a new control system for the operation of our Pumps as Turbines (PATs). As a company build out from many years of research, R&D remains one of our main pillars. In this case, the new control system will offer a more robust solution for our hydropower equipment. Additionally, it will increase the peak efficiency of the system whilst reducing maintenance. It will also enable us to offer a fully integrated cloud monitoring interface, where the operator can visualize and download historical data.
The tests were successfully completed on the laboratory test rig, confirming the technical feasibility of the new control equipment, as well as satisfying all the safety conditions for the right operation of the equipment.
The tested control panel will actually be installed in one of our coming installations soon.

Pumps as turbines for micro and pico hydropower applications

Easy Hydro offers complete solutions for small run-off-river projects

Only 44% of the hydropower potential in Europe is currently exploited, with the remaining 56% made up of small sites for which the adoption of a conventional full-blown turbine would not be economically attractive. The novelty of the Easy Hydro approach is to reduce the complexity and cost of the installation in order to turn economically feasible sites down to the “Pico” scale (e.g. less than 5 kW of installed power)

Easy Hydro offers reliable, low-cost and easy to maintain hydropower converters specifically designed for Run-off-river sites. In order to achieve this, the turbine consists of a standard water pump with reversed flow direction instead of a specifically designed conventional turbine. This technology allows for conveniently exploiting untapped resources and generating CO2-free renewable electricity without damaging the environment.

Press Release – Daniele Novara from Easy Hydro among the three finalists of the EU Sustainable Energy Awards

Daniele Novara, CEO of Easy Hydro, has been announced as a finalist in the upcoming EU Sustainable Energy Awards in relation to the first-ever hydropower station in a mine. The public vote on the online platform is open until the 22nd of October, and it is now possible to support Daniele by clicking on the link below:

A mere 40 kilometres north of Dublin, Ireland, a water turbine located deep in a zinc mine is producing 30 kW of clean energy thanks to a novel technology developed by Daniele Novara, 29, and his start-up Easy Hydro. Such innovative technology has stemmed from Daniele’s work at Trinity College Dublin and uses modular water pumps to create low-cost, small-scale hydropower stations capable of exploiting untapped energy within existing water pipes.

Our installation at the zinc mine in Ireland is the first-ever hydropower station within an operating underground mine. At this site alone we will see annual savings of 200 MWh, the equivalent of powering roughly 50 households, and an offset of about 60 tonnes of carbon per year,“ explains Daniele. “Our technology is particularly suitable for recovering energy from pipe networks and existing water infrastructure, making it a scalable solution for mining companies looking to green their operations and consume less electricity”.

During his PhD at Trinity College Dublin, Daniele, an Italian-born engineer, developed the intellectual property that eventually led to him founding Easy Hydro at the end of 2019. Thanks to collaboration with EU-based equipment manufacturers and a Swedish mining company, together with funding from the European Institute of Innovation and Technology’s (EIT) Raw Materials consortium, he and his team were able to complete the first turbine installation in 2021.

Prior to completing his PhD in Ireland, Daniele obtained a BSc in Italy at Politecnico di Torino and a double MSc degree in Energy Engineering and Management from universities in Poland and Portugal offered by the EIT InnoEnergy consortium. This international outlook has followed Daniele to the business world, where as CEO of Easy Hydro he is already in discussions to replicate the hydropower station with major mining companies in areas such as North America, South Africa and Sweden.

Our goal now is to focus on commercialisation and creating a positive impact in the mining sector at scale,“ says Daniele. “The pilot installation proves that we can produce carbon-free electricity from surplus water pressure in the underground works in a cost-effective way”.

There is an outstanding potential with this technology. Its widespread use could result in savings of over 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually,“ says Daniele. With large-scale adoption of the technology in view, he is optimistic about the impact his company can make and its contribution to bringing the EU closer to the 2030 targets.
